Havenwelten SAIL Summer 2011

Havenwelten SAIL Summer 2011

A fleet of windjammers, open-air concerts, live acrobatics and an antiques market: tourists and locals will find a summer full of attractions in Bremerhaven this year. The reason for this is the holding of the first Havenwelten SAIL Summer 2011, a new series of events on the site around the New Port which is being partly funded by the ERDF. The event is intended to market the popular Havenwelten tourist attraction, which includes the German Emigration Center and Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost, as an ensemble and as a symbol of the city.

For eight weeks, locals and visitors will be able to choose between familiar and new events. The opening event of SAIL Summer 2011 will be a concert with the opera chorus of the Municipal Orchestra in the Stadttheater on 18 June. The next day, collectors and those who like rummaging around will enjoy the maritime antiques market. The wares are to range from old books to picture postcards, maps, paintings, coins and postage stamps.

On 9 and 10 July, music fans can look forward to the festival of choirs, at which some 30 choirs from all round Germany will be singing on six stages. A week later, comedians, acrobats, actors, improvisers, artists and entertainers will perform on the Havenwelten site in shows entitled MUSIKwelten and THEATERwelten. Life will go Mediterranean on 23 July, when an Italian Night will attract people to the Havenwelten site with music, stilt walkers and a pasta-eating competition.

The finale to Havenwelten SAIL Summer 2011 will be the 37th Bremerhaven Festwoche, with the Maritime Bazaar from 27 to 31 July. This year’s event is focusing on German-American relations, and will be honoured not least by the anchoring of the US Coast Guard’s barque Eagle in the New Port.
The events are largely financed through stall rental fees, sponsorship, cultural assistance funding and other revenue. Costs totalling €111,000, which cannot be covered by these sources of income, are being paid by ERDF funding as part of the overall measure entitled Havenwelten SAIL Summer 2011.

Havenwelten SAIL Summer 2011

Following the success of the Havenwelten SAIL Summer 2011, the Havenwelten Summer series is to be continued with a total of six events a year, in order to make the new Havenwelten Bremerhaven tourism area and thus also the economic centre of Bremerhaven better known outside the region.

The chartering of windjammers, the marketing of sailing trips and the presence of unique replica ships will form part of every Havenwelten Summer festival. In addition to this, various themes will be showcased each year in co-operation with the local players, such as issues relating to the local area like climate research, offshore wind energy, the history of shipping and emigration.

The local companies and Bremerhaven’s scientific institutions (like the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, the Climate House, the Emigration Center, the German Maritime Museum and the Zoo at the Sea) will be involved in the events and have the opportunity to present themselves. There will also be targeted services to promote business in Bremerhaven like the Tour de Wind or the Harbour Bus.
