Returning Hemelingen Lake to something like a natural state

renaturation of the shore

The aim of this project is to strengthen the Weser’s ecosystem in terms of its functionality as a natural space and a recreational amenity in the Bremen-Hemelingen neighbourhood.
The levelling out of the slope of the lakeside, and the introduction of additional shallow water areas, is intended to improve the capacity of the lake and the microclimate to clean themselves. Furthermore, better preconditions are to be put in place to attract a wider range of species, particularly in the lakeside zones reserved for natural development.
Along a limited section of the lakeside, access to and usage of the lake is to be substantially improved by levelling off the slope of the lakeside and by adding a sandy beach sloping gently down to the lake. The redesigned area is intended to become an attractive local amenity which invites people to do sport or to relax by the lakeside.
