membranotec GmbH & Co KG

membranotec is receiving funding from the European Regional Development Fund in order to realise a project entitled Membra-Met together with Bremen University. The aim of the project is to find out whether a new type of nanomembrane can be used as part of a commercial cleaning process in small and medium-sized biogas facilities.

Biogas has an outstanding environmental record and, in processed form, can be fed into the natural gas grid as biomethane and used by households and gas-driven cars. However, so far large-scale facilities have been required in order to clean biogas on a commercial basis, so that insufficient use can be made at present of the potential offered by the decentralised generation of biogas, e.g. in agriculture.

Just six months after the launch of the project, it was possible to say in principle that the nanomembrane in question makes it possible to clean biogas to virtually any quality whilst the throughput is 10,000 to 100,000 times higher compared with traditional commercial membranes. The next steps in the project will clarify the extent to which these results can be transferred to gas mixtures from biogas plants.
