The Fraunhofer Institute for Medical Image Computing MEVIS in Bremen does research and development work in the field of software development for computer-assisted medicine, bringing together medical imaging, image-assisted therapy and medical computer science. Working and interacting closely with healthcare professionals, Fraunhofer MEVIS is developing IT-based systems for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the breast, liver and lung, the brain, the cardiovascular system, and cancers.
The institute, which was integrated into the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in 2009, has steadily expanded in recent years. The initial staff of 10 in 1995 has now risen to 136, and is still growing. This growth now means that there is no more space to accommodate further staff on the current site. A new building is needed for the institute so that it can continue to grow as forecast and thus expand its R&D facilities.
The new building is to have approximately 2,700 m² of floorspace and offer room for more than 200 staff. It will include offices, seminar and meeting rooms, as well as laboratories, demonstration areas, storerooms, an archive, social areas and IT server rooms.
The construction of the new building will enable the institute to continue its dynamic growth and help it to raise both its own competitiveness and that of Bremen in the field of healthcare/life sciences expertise. The number of staff is forecast to rise to more than 200 in the next five years.
The establishment and expansion of Fraunhofer MEVIS and the related growth in the Fraunhofer community in Bremen are giving a boost to the regional and supra-regional visibility of applied non-university research in Bremen.
Fraunhofer MEVIS already has a global network of outstanding clinical, scientific and commercial partnerships, and the institute also feeds this into its cooperation with its partners in Bremen. Its specialist expertise, technical infrastructure and not least its backing from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft mean that Fraunhofer MEVIS is extremely well positioned to transfer knowledge and technology to the regional stakeholders in medical technology and the healthcare sector.
Fraunhofer MEVIS will be able to assume a leading role as a mediator and incubator to stimulate and strengthen commercial R&D activities in Bremen, both via direct cooperation and in the context of research projects funded from external sources.
Further to this, Fraunhofer MEVIS uses its research findings to develop software products which enable regional companies like MeVis Medical Solutions and MeVis BreastCare to assume a leading role on the market in the field of diagnostic systems, innovative image analysis and visualisation processes, and the planning of operations.
