Roadmap for a gradual defossilisation of the steel industry and urban infrastructures using electrolysis hydrogen in Bremen

A clear roadmap to build up hydrogen value chains in Bremen, Bremerhaven and the surrounding regions, and an analysis of the potential to build an electrolyser on the site of Bremen’s steel mill – these are the goals of a research project of the Resilient Energy Systems department of Bremen University and the Innovation and Structural Economics Research Group (FGIS).

How can a technical facility be realised? How can it be integrated into the existing infrastructure? What new infrastructure measures are needed? The associated partners ArcelorMittal, Ingaver, EWE and wpd are providing data and human resources in order to answer these and other questions.

An electrolyser powered by renewable electricity is to cover some of the demand for hydrogen and oxygen in the steel mill for which fossil fuels are currently used. The roadmap is to provide recommendations for the concept design of an intended realisation phase. In addition to a multi-criterion-based assessment of technical concepts, there will in particular also be socio-economic analyses backed by stakeholder dialogues. The intention is to produce specific recommendations for action which will lead to a cross-sectoral clientele for the renewable energy sources.

The project is financed with funds from the European Union and the State of Bremen, the Senator for Climate Change Mitigation, Environment, Mobility, Urban Development and Housing Construction, the Applied Environmental Research funding programme.
