The street lighting in the fishing port is being modernised. Old mercury vapour lamps are being replaced by low-energy LED lights. This measure will not only vastly cut electricity costs, but will also help to mitigate climate change.
Some 263 street lights in the fishing port are being fitted with modern LED lights. LED technology is highly efficient. The conversion will cut energy consumption and thus also carbon emissions. A measure that helps the climate and cuts electricity bills.
In future, approximately 121,549 kWh will be saved each year.
The Bremen 2014-2020 ERDF programme includes funding for carbon-efficient commercial and urban structures. The replacement of lights in Bremerhaven’s fishing port aims to help the State of Bremen and thus the European Union meet climate targets by cutting carbon emissions.
Approximately 8,000 people are employed in the 400-plus companies located on the 480 hectares of the fishing port in Bremerhaven. Roughly 90% of the fishing port is owned by the Freie Hansestadt – Land – (FHB). This land includes the streets, which are licensed for public traffic. Due to its large number of resident companies, the fishing port is of special economic significance for the city of Bremerhaven and the State of Bremen. In view of its industrial orientation and the available research expertise, the fishing port plays a special role in the implementation of the energy transition and the fight against climate change.
The port operator Fischereihafen-Betriebsgesellschaft mbH (FBG) – a 100% subsidiary of FHB – currently manages 800 lights, 263 of which are still fitted with conventional mercury vapour lamps. The conversion of the street lighting to LED lights offers significant potential to save energy and cut carbon emissions. Also, the technical infrastructure is being modernised. In view of the manufacturing activities in the resident companies and the related 24-hour logistics, it is vital to have good street lighting in the industrial and commercial centre.
The ERDF funding is currently resulting in the fitting of 263 LED lights. The total energy savings amount to 121,549 kWh each year.
