Industrial NRE engine licensed for use on inland waterways

In this project, ScanDiesel GmbH is developing a new engine for use by vessels on inland waterways by redesigning a prototype industrial engine and adapting it for use on waterways whilst complying with the new Stage V and the Inland Waterways Vessels (Surveys and Certification) Regulations. Marinisation describes the process of modifying a (diesel) engine so that it can be used on board a vessel.

In this case, an industrial engine (6-cylinder in-line engine with a capacity of 13 litres and output ranging from 250 to 400 kW) which complies with Stage V is selected. The developments in the course of the project enable it to conform with the Inland Waterways Vessels Regulations and then to be presented to a technical service for certification that it adheres to both sets of rules.

Since the industrial engine has not been designed for use by shipping, a few new developments are needed. The project will help to save energy and resources as fuel consumption is reduced:
- first engine to comply with the new Stage V emission rules
- clear reduction in emissions compared with previous engines for boats and ships
- use of the latest mass-produced common rail engine technology using particulate filters and an SCR catalyst

Overall, clear reductions in emissions of CO, HC, NOx and particulates are expected.

The project is financed with funding from the European Union and the State of Bremen – by the Senator for Climate Change Mitigation, Environment, Mobility, Urban Development and Housing Construction under the Applied Environmental Research funding programme.
