Electrochemical CO2 reduction

In the context of the project, the beneficiaries, the Center for Environmental Research and Sustainable Technology (UFT) and Faculty 2 of Bremen University, are to develop a technical process for the electrochemical reduction of CO2.
Here, electrodes are to be sensitised via the use of dyes or enzymes so that the CO2 can also be used in small concentrations, as in ambient air, for example.

Also, novel electrode materials based on nanoporous copper are to be used, meaning that the material conversion can be increased for technical applications.
A conversion of the CO2 into synthetic fuels is not another sink, unlike storage; rather, it keeps the substances in the cycle of use and means that central hydrocarbons can be made without the generation of additional greenhouse gases or the use of fossil resources.
This makes it a highly topical and particularly important research priority. In order to attain the goals, the plan is to work through the many different tasks in an interdisciplinary combination of doctoral theses.

The project is financed with funding from the European Union and the State of Bremen, the Senator for Climate Change Mitigation, Environment, Mobility, Urban Development and Housing Construction, the Applied Environmental Research funding programme.
