Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD)

Development of a selective single-use pre-test for the categorisation of waste insulating material containing HBCD under waste management rules

Wand mit Dämmstoff, 106313 / photocase.de

The laboratories of Dr. Döring GmbH want to use this project to develop a simple pre-test which can provide immediate information about the hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD or HBCDD) content in insulating material.
HBCD is added as a flame retardant to plastics, for example, so that fires can either be prevented entirely or at least the spread of the fire delayed. It is mainly used in polystyrene insulating material for buildings. Further to this, it is used in packaging plastics, casing plastics and the coating of the back of curtains and upholstery fabrics.

The project is financed with funding from the European Union and the State of Bremen – by the Senator for Climate Change Mitigation, Environment, Mobility, Urban Development and Housing Construction under the Applied Environmental Research funding programme.
