FormaSmell

Miniaturised laser-based formaldehyde sensor for the online monitoring of technical operations

In order to determine the presence of formaldehyde in the air, an online monitoring system with a spectrally tunable DFB laser is to be developed, validated and established in a project run jointly by Bremen University and the Bremen Environmental Institute.

An optical measurement module is to serve as the basis. It is – depending on the length of the measuring section – to be able to detect formaldehyde in gases (air, exhausts, flue gas) in the range from 0.01 ppm upwards.
The planned online monitoring system makes it possible to determine and monitor the formaldehyde concentration in the ambient air of a workstation. This covers both safety aspects and process-related functions.

The project is financed with funding from the European Union and the State of Bremen, the Senator for Climate Change Mitigation, Environment, Mobility, Urban Development and Housing Construction, the Applied Environmental Research funding programme.
