Rehabilitating the River Weser bathing area in Bremerhaven

Since the Old/New Port area has been developed for tourism purposes into the Havenwelten site, the River Weser bathing area right on the riverside is growing in popularity – students of Bremerhaven University and employees of the Alfred Wegener Institute are also making more and more use of the facility. As a result, the number of visitors has risen from 5,000 to more than 10,000 a year in the course of time.
Due to the salty air, the annual storm-tide damage and general wear-and-tear, the various buildings are in poor condition and in urgent need of renovation. This is now taking place with ERDF funding.

Not least, the renovation concept includes

  • the demolition of rotten timber constructions on the site and the erection of new reinforced concrete buildings,
  • the fitting of flood-protection flaps for windows and doors, and
  • the renovation of the link building and the solid building housing the ticket office, the beachmaster and the storage room.

The work will also open up to five elements of the existing flood protection wall, creating a view of the bathing area and the river.

The renovation of the River Weser bathing area will help to make it easier to experience the river in the city, and thus fits in with the objective of action area 2.3. Enhancing the image of the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven. The Havenwelten will strengthen business in Bremerhaven and improve the image of the city’s centre. This will be complemented by the renovation of the bathing area, which is very popular with the locals.
